Google is the most well-known search engine in the world.  Anyone I ask, only using the one word “Google”, is able to tell me something about how “Google helps them to find out information on the internet”. So one would then think that Google would provide a re-searcher with the most up-to-date, accurate, relevant information about a topic, just because of it’s reputation. Through this inquiry I am now on a pathway to see if that assumption is accurate. Will Google help me to find out the most accurate, up-to-date factual information about the questions I have about Inquiry? I am going to begin this search by using keywords from one of my Inquiry questions.

  1. How should a library be involved with all classes in their inquiries?

I wanted to purposely start VERY basic, imagining that I was an elementary student and if I was searching for something without any prior advice as to the use of Booleans, Synonyms and other key search tools. What might I come up with? There is an amazing amount of information about “Inquiry”. However, the relevance of the information found on this front page, was only 3 references out of a possible 11. All the other posts were for government, finance, etc. If I had no prior knowledge of the expert tools to refine a search, to be more time efficient and to really find information that I needed to know, then I would be sitting here for a very long time.

So after this little experiment I delved into what I really wanted to find out, in a more precise way.

This initial search showed how broad this topic is. There were references to youtube, diagrams and images, blogs, teaching methods; Kath Murdoch and definitions. Time to narrow the information.

I added the Boolean Operator AND as I wanted to explore Inquiry Learning in the Elementary sense. I also added Quotation marks around the words “inquiry learning” to ensure that I received information on this combined, not as two separate words. The number of results is substantially smaller as I have narrowed my search to just this area of inquiry. Scholarly articles have come up along with youtube, lesson plan ideas and blogs. The search is still broad for me considering that I want to focus on the Library environment. Many finds related to Science so I endeavoured to narrow more.

Adding the word library brought me even closer to what I wanted to find out. Scholarly articles were again provided (though most on the first page were again Science based), aswell as blogs, book sites and articles. Interesting to note that there were some that provided opinions and guidance to how a librarian can work well in Inquiry classrooms. Now time to add in some synonyms to help and a wildcard.

Adding in the synonyms, OR and brackets force google to search all of these terms.  The results in the search increased because of the use of synonyms . The word curiosity began appearing which was interesting to me as curiosity is a keyword from one of my other main questions and I hadn’t typed it in. More links to scholarly articles. Also links to blogs, opinions, and research papers.  Only one or two articles were helping my quest to answer my questions.


This screenshot shows how the Google search mentioned above led to one of my other questions incorporating curiosity. It was an interesting manual to consider.

From here I wanted to narrow my search using the proximity element.

What was found here were some articles of interest but really, lots of adds and links to school studies. It wasn’t really a good search for me and what I was hoping to find. Others completed prior were better for my question.



Google is where I was always going to start. As stated earlier, it is the most known search engine to use. Google provides me with all the options. I can be reading information for days. The use of Boolean Operators, Synonyms helps me refine my search to what I want but I think Google Scholar is going to provide me with more research, evidenced based information and not just a range of viewpoints and opinions. I am looking forward to finding out.

Advantages: easy to use; shows me information from graphics to articles to resources to planning examples and much more; able to see what other schools world-wide are doing.

Disadvantages: so much information to go through; inefficient for time

My new questions:

  1. How as a teacher librarian do I fit effective Inquiry into my library sessions?
  2. Is guided inquiry allowing for curiosity to still be a part of the classroom?

  1. What an interesting and easy to read blog! I love how you used the annotated image to show how your search had changed because of what you found. The way you sorted and analysed the searches that you conducted was also really handy and the analysis was quite insightful too. Did you think about maybe searching with the NOT Science or -science parameter to take those results out the equasion?
